Fitness

Aerobics

Fitness Kickboxing:

A high tempo exercise class that combines resistance training and aerobics with a specific emphasis on kickboxing techniques and bag striking.  This class increases strength, flexibility and overall fitness levels.  Appropriate for all experience and fitness levels, each student will enhance their ability to burn calories as they progress through the class led by high energy instructors.

Martial Arts

Kickboxing

One of the latest additions to the USATC selection of martial arts is Kickboxing.  It is the only program of its kind in the metro area. USA Kickboxing is a structured color ranking system, similar to a martial arts system, which allows men and women of all ages to begin at a basic level and work their way up to an advanced level under instruction.

The origin of Kickboxing can be dated back to the early 1970's.  American karate teachers and students became disenchanted with the strict controls put in place at some martial arts competitions.  They felt that these competitions were too strict in limiting full contact kicks and punches.  Kickboxing was designed to offer competitors a full contact experience.

Safety was a definite concern, so as the years progressed, advances in safety equipment and styles helped make Kickboxing what it is today. Competitors in this sport use a wide variety of kicks and punches, melding martial arts with traditional boxing.

Taekwondo

What is TKD?
Taekwondo is known as the “way of hands and feet”, since it is characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks.  Developed in ancient Korea, Taekwondo is considered to be one of the oldest of the martial arts with deep spiritual traditions.  The earliest records of Martial Arts in Korea date back to approximately 50 B.C.
We are proud to offer taekwondo at United Sport and Athlete.

Why Taekwondo?

There are several reasons to pursue Taekwondo.  First, Taekwondo is an excellent mechanism for developing overall fitness levels in both youth and adults.  Second, Taekwondo training enhances the development of character.  Third, training at USATC provides a unique opportunity to take your skills to the next level..

Fitness Development

The fitness requirements of Taekwondo are not unlike other combat sports such as boxing or wrestling.  The competitor must be able to deliver explosive kicks and punches as well as be able to move with great quickness and agility to avoid being kicked or punched.  The competitor must also have tremendous aerobic and anaerobic conditioning to complete a match.

Resistance training and conditioning alone is not enough to prepare the competitor for the demands of Taekwondo.  Technical training and flexibility are also of great importance.  As footwork, kicking technique and punching technique improve; the competitor will move with greater speed and agility and will deliver blows with greater force and efficiency.  Additionally, as flexibility improves, the competitor will be able to deliver a wider range of techniques during a match.

Bottom Line: Taekwondo training is an excellent method for improving speed, agility, coordination, power, conditioning and flexibility.

Character Development

Our goal is to not only make you the best martial artist and athlete you can possibly be, but to also make you the best person you can be. Our exceptional instructors are ready to help you achieve your peak.

The Martial arts are life changing.  They are not easy, but they present a challenge that brings out the best in people.  We encourage you to try a life changing experience that will bring out the best in you.

Weightlifting

Olympic Weightlifting

Training for American Sports (SPORT PERFORMANCE)

Football, basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, volleyball, wrestling and track and field are considered to be some of the more popular American sports.  Although each sport is unique, several common characteristics can be identified.  First, each of these sports is considered to be an anaerobic sport.  That is, the ability to move quickly and explosively will improve the likelihood of success.  Second, each sport involves “triple extension” of the lower body.

Triple extension is the straightening of the hip, knee and ankle joints and can be observed during sprinting, jumping, batting, wrestling and tackling.  This same movement can be observed during both the snatch and clean and jerk movements.  The bottom line is that in order to maximize improvement in sport ability, the training movements should mimic the most important movements that occur in the sport.

BOTTOM LINE: No other training methodology develops the “triple extension” better than Weightlifting.

Explosiveness

Explosiveness is a difficult term to define.  Simply put, it is the ability to generate force at high velocities.  Although strength (the ability to generate force) is an important component, strength alone does not make an athlete better.  It is the generation of force in a very short period of time that improves running speed, jumping ability, agility and overall explosiveness.

Research demonstrates that the best way to improve explosiveness is to generate great amounts of power output while training.  Power is calculated by taking into consideration both force and the speed of the movement.  The greatest power outputs that have ever been recorded are during the Weightlifting movements.

BOTTOM LINE: No other training method can improve explosiveness better than Weightlifting.

Unique Opportunity

Compared to other club sports, the sport of Weightlifting is very under represented.  With top level coaching and hard work, most youth have a legitimate opportunity to compete at a regional, national or international level.  Coach Jianping Ma has coached numerous champions at each competitive level.  He is extremely excited to begin the development of champions in the Cedar Valley.

BOTTOM LINE: No other sport may have greater opportunities for recognized achievement than Weightlifting.

Programs

Junior Weightlifting Program: Children ages 10-18 are eligible to participate in the Junior Weightlifting Program.  Activities include a weightlifting specific warm-up, performance of the proper Weightlifting movements (snatch, clean and jerk) and supplementary exercises such as partial weightlifting movements, squats, presses, pulls and core exercises.  Exposure to basic Weightlifting techniques, flexibility training and general strength development can be expected in this program.
Elite Weightlifting Program: Children ages 10-18 and adults who have the desire and the physical potential to compete at a Regional, National and/or International level are eligible to participate in the Elite Weightlifting Program.  Exposure to advanced Weightlifting techniques; greater training intensities, more complex periodization strategies and aggressive development of flexibility, strength and power can be expected in this program.

Martial arts classes taught by black belt instructors
Tutoring and character education component taught by University of Northern Iowa education major

Our Welcome Letter:
Parents:

We are so excited to have your child participate in our after school program.  We hope the first day was a good one.  We’ve sent your child home with their Taekwondo uniform however they will not need to bring it until next week.  Formal Taekwondo training will begin on Monday under the tutelage of Junior National Champion, Ryan Hendershot.  Ryan has been participated in Taekwondo for over 15 years and is a 4th degree black belt.  He was a Junior National Champion in 2004 and has since medaled three times.  Ryan has been coaching Taekwondo for four years and is currently a student at Hawkeye Community College.

The education component of our after school program will be coordinated by Katy Plants.  Katy is a 3rd year Elementary Education major at the University of Northern Iowa and has been volunteering in the public schools for the last three years.  Katy will engage the children in a variety of activities related to academics, arts, crafts and character education.

Since this is our first year offering this program, we would like to invite you to partner with us in recruiting new members.  As an incentive, we will provide a free of week of tuition for every child that joins the after school program as a result of your recruitment.

Once again, on behalf of United Sport and Athlete, thank you for enrolling your child in our after school program.  If there is anything we can do to make your child’s experience more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to ask.
