Taekwondo is known as the “way of hands and feet”, since it is characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks.  Developed in ancient Korea, Taekwondo is considered to be one of the oldest of the martial arts with deep spiritual traditions.  The earliest records of Martial Arts in Korea date back to approximately 50 B.C.

We are proud to offer taekwondo at United Sport and Athlete. Classes are led by Master Russ O'Connell, just one of six USAT coaches in the nation!

Why Taekwondo?

There are several reasons to pursue Taekwondo.  First, Taekwondo is an excellent mechanism for developing overall fitness levels in both youth and adults.  Second, Taekwondo training enhances the development of character.  Third, training under the Peak Performance Team provides a unique opportunity to compete nationally and internationally.

Fitness Development

The fitness requirements of Taekwondo are not unlike other combat sports such as boxing or wrestling.  The competitor must be able to deliver explosive kicks and punches as well as be able to move with great quickness and agility to avoid being kicked or punched.  The competitor must also have tremendous aerobic and anaerobic conditioning to complete a match.

Resistance training and conditioning alone is not enough to prepare the competitor for the demands of Taekwondo.  Technical training and flexibility are also of great importance.  As footwork, kicking technique and punching technique improve; the competitor will move with greater speed and agility and will deliver blows with greater force and efficiency.  Additionally, as flexibility improves, the competitor will be able to deliver a wider range of techniques during a match.

Bottom Line: Taekwondo training is an excellent method for improving speed, agility, coordination, power, conditioning and flexibility.

Character Development

Desire, dedication and discipline are three words that define what is at the heart of the Peak Performance Team.  Our goal is to not only make you the best martial artist and athlete you can possibly be, but to also make you the best person you can be. BOTTOM LINE: Taekwondo training with the Peak Performance Team will challenge each member to be the best person they can be.

Unique Opportunity

The Peak Performance Team in Waterloo is one of six teams across the nation.  The Peak Performance Team designation comes from the Head National Taekwondo Team Coach, Juan Moreno and founder of Peak Performance USA.  The Peak Performance Team has had more Junior, Collegiate and Senior National Team members than any other club in the nation.

BOTTOM LINE: The Peak Performance Team will provide the greatest opportunity to compete at a National or International caliber in the sport of Taekwondo.
